ABOUT UNIVERSITY
The University of Hull is a public research university located in Kingston upon Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It was founded in 1927 as University College Hull and received its royal charter in 1954, becoming the third university in Yorkshire and the fourteenth in England to gain university status. The university’s main campus is based in Hull and includes the Hull York Medical School, a joint initiative with the University of York, while students are represented by Hull University Union. The institution was established with strong local support, particularly from benefactor Thomas Ferens, and its foundation stone was laid by Prince Albert, later King George VI. Teaching initially began with just 39 students in one building, now known as the Venn Building, which still serves as the university’s administrative centre. Expansion accelerated after the Second World War, leading to the construction of key buildings such as the Cohen Building, the Chemistry Building and the Canham Turner Building, alongside temporary structures used to accommodate rising student numbers. Although many campus buildings are red brick, the University of Hull is classified as a younger civic or whitetile university rather than a traditional redbrick institution. Major growth took place during the vice-chancellorship of Sir Brynmor Jones between 1956 and 1972, when student numbers increased fourfold and the Brynmor Jones Library became a central academic facility. In 1972, research conducted at Hull led to the development of stable liquid crystal technology, contributing to the creation of modern liquid crystal displays and earning the university the Queen’s Award for Technological Achievement. In the 21st century, the university expanded further through the acquisition of neighbouring campuses, forming the West Campus and strengthening its medical and business schools. It also played a key role in Hull’s UK City of Culture 2017 celebrations through academic and creative contributions. In recent years, the university has faced financial challenges, leading to staff reductions and departmental restructuring, including the closure of its chemistry department. In December 2025, Vice-Chancellor Professor David Petley stepped down from his role.
