COURSE CURRICULUM

The Nursing (Pre-Registration) Mental Health MSc is structured over two years, combining theoretical learning with extensive clinical practice to develop competent and compassionate mental health nurses. In the first year, students focus on foundational knowledge, professional development, and essential nursing skills. Modules such as Becoming a Professional – Mental Health Nursing and Introduction to Mental Health Nursing introduce the principles of mental health care and professional standards. Developing Critical Knowledge and Skills in Mental Health Nursing and Understanding Knowledge and Evidence for Nursing equip students with clinical, analytical, and evidence-based practice capabilities, while Developing Research Knowledge and Evidence for Mental Health Nursing Practice provides essential research skills to inform effective clinical decision-making. Nursing Practice 1 allows students to apply theory in practical settings, gaining experience in caring for individuals with acute or long-term mental health conditions across a variety of environments. In the second year, the focus shifts to advanced professional development and consolidation of clinical expertise. Modules including Being a Professional, Developing as a Professional, and Enhancing Knowledge and Skills in Mental Health Nursing strengthen reflective practice, leadership, and complex care management abilities. Nursing Practice 2 and 3 provide further structured placements, and Using Evidence and Research to Enhance Mental Health Nursing Practice ensures graduates can integrate research into care. This comprehensive program prepares students to meet NMC standards and practice confidently as skilled, compassionate mental health nurses.
