COURSE CURRICULUM

The Physical Education and Youth Sport Coaching BSc(Hons) degree is structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of sport coaching, physical education, and youth development across three years. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge in anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, and coaching, alongside physical education pedagogy and research methods. Safeguarding children and young people in sport is also introduced, establishing an essential framework for safe and effective practice. The second year expands on these concepts, focusing on child development and maturation, youth sport coaching, advanced pedagogy, and the psychology of coaching. Students also continue developing research skills and have the opportunity to gain practical experience through a work placement, applying theoretical knowledge in real-world settings. In the third year, the emphasis shifts toward applied and independent learning. Students engage with applied research methods, advanced youth sport coaching, contemporary issues in physical education, and project management, while further developing physical education pedagogy. The program balances theoretical study with practical experience, promoting critical thinking, reflective practice, and inclusive coaching strategies. By the end of the course, graduates are equipped with the knowledge, technical skills, and professional experience needed to work effectively in youth sport coaching, physical education, sport development, and related roles, while fostering participation, performance, and wellbeing among children and young people.
