COURSE CURRICULUM

The Pharmaceutical Chemistry BSc(Hons) degree is structured to build knowledge and practical skills progressively over three years. In the first year, students are introduced to foundational topics such as analytical science and spectroscopy, the reactivity and properties of carbon compounds, and the principles of states of matter, kinetics, and thermodynamics. This year also includes an introduction to pharmaceutics, biochemistry, and human physiology, providing a broad understanding of the chemical and biological sciences essential to pharmaceutical studies. In the second year, the focus shifts to more advanced and specialized topics. Students explore methods and strategies in organic synthesis, molecular analysis, and instrumental techniques, while continuing to develop their pharmaceutics knowledge. This year also covers infectious diseases and therapeutics, as well as cell biology, allowing students to connect chemical principles with biological systems and medical applications. In the third year, students consolidate their learning by undertaking an independent research project. This project enables them to investigate a chosen area of pharmaceutical chemistry in depth, applying theoretical knowledge and laboratory skills to real-world problems. Overall, the course is designed to progressively develop expertise, combining a strong scientific foundation with practical experience, preparing students for careers in research, pharmaceutical development, or further postgraduate study.
