COURSE CURRICULUM

The Chemistry BSc(Hons) degree is structured to provide a strong foundation in core chemical principles while progressively developing advanced knowledge and practical skills. In the first year, students are introduced to fundamental topics such as atomic and molecular structure, the reactivity and properties of carbon compounds, and key physical chemistry concepts including states of matter, kinetics, and thermodynamics. They also gain essential laboratory and analytical skills through modules in spectroscopy, data handling, and practical chemistry techniques. In the second year, the course deepens understanding across all major branches of chemistry, with modules covering coordination complexes and inorganic materials, organic synthesis strategies, physical chemistry, and molecular analysis using advanced instrumental methods. Practical laboratory work continues to play a central role, reinforcing theoretical learning. In the final year, students focus on advanced and specialised topics while developing independent research skills through a major research project. Additional modules include advanced practical chemistry, heterocycles and modern synthesis, organometallic and bioinorganic chemistry, photochemistry, and surface science. This combination of theoretical study, practical experience, and research training equips graduates with the skills needed for careers in scientific research, industry, or further academic study in chemistry and related fields.
