COURSE CURRICULUM

The Chemical Engineering and Chemistry BSc(Hons) degree is structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of both disciplines, blending theoretical knowledge with practical applications. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in chemistry and chemical engineering through modules covering the reactivity and properties of carbon compounds, states of matter, kinetics and thermodynamics, chemical engineering design, heat transfer, fluid flow, and laboratory work in inorganic chemistry. They also develop essential data handling skills, preparing them for more complex analyses in later years. The second year focuses on advancing both chemical engineering and chemistry expertise, with modules on transport processes and unit operations, coordination complexes and inorganic materials, organic synthesis strategies, physical chemistry principles, chemical and biochemical reaction engineering, and continued chemical engineering design projects. These modules emphasize problem-solving, process analysis, and practical lab experience, allowing students to integrate theory with hands-on practice. In the final year, students undertake more specialized and research-focused modules, including a research project, solid-fluid systems and particle technology, heterocycles and modern synthesis, surface science, organometallic, bioinorganic, and photochemistry, and sustainable industrial systems. This final year allows students to explore advanced topics, develop independent research skills, and gain expertise in applying chemical and engineering principles to industrial and sustainable contexts, preparing them for careers in science, engineering, or research industries.
