COURSE CURRICULUM

The Illustration BA(Hons) course at Huddersfield is structured over three years to develop both creative and professional skills in visual communication. In the first year, students focus on foundational skills through Studio Practice 1 and 2, alongside Introduction to Critical Languages, which helps develop an understanding of visual theory, critical thinking, and creative analysis. Year two builds on these foundations, with Studio Practice 3 and 4 allowing students to explore more advanced techniques, refine their artistic voice, and experiment with different media and methods. Expanded Critical Languages deepens theoretical understanding and contextual awareness, while Professional Practice introduces students to real-world industry applications, including portfolio development, collaborative projects, and exposure to creative briefs. In the final year, students undertake Research and Development for Fine Art and Illustration, encouraging independent investigation, experimentation, and integration of theory and practice. The Final Major Project enables students to consolidate their skills into a substantial body of work that reflects their personal style and creative vision, demonstrating readiness for professional practice. Applied Critical Languages continues to strengthen critical, analytical, and reflective skills, ensuring graduates are equipped with the knowledge, experience, and portfolio required to pursue careers in illustration, fine art, visual storytelling, and broader creative industries.
