COURSE CURRICULUM

The Fine Art and Illustration BA(Hons) course at Huddersfield is structured to progressively develop students’ creative, technical, and critical skills across three years. In the first year, students focus on foundational studio practice, exploring various media and techniques while engaging with critical thinking and visual analysis through the Introduction to Critical Languages module. This combination helps establish a strong base in practical skills and contextual understanding, encouraging students to begin developing their unique artistic voice. In the second year, students build on these foundations through more advanced studio practice, expanding their technical capabilities and experimenting with creative processes in Studio Practice 3 and 4. Alongside this, Expanded Critical Languages and Professional Practice modules provide insight into contemporary artistic discourse, industry expectations, and professional development, helping students contextualize their work and prepare for real-world creative environments. In the final year, students undertake in-depth research and development for their practice, culminating in a Final Major Project that showcases their abilities in fine art, illustration, or a combination of both. Applied Critical Languages complements this by offering a framework for critical reflection and contextual engagement. Across all three years, the course balances practical studio work, theoretical understanding, and professional awareness, equipping graduates with the skills, creative identity, and confidence to succeed in careers as artists, illustrators, or visual communicators.
