ABOUT UNIVERSITY

The University of Huddersfield is a public research university in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England, with roots dating back to the 19th century and university status granted in 1992. Its origins lie in early efforts to provide scientific and technical education for local workers, beginning with initiatives such as the Young Men’s Mental Improvement Society in 1841 and the Huddersfield Mechanics’ Institution. Over time, the institution evolved through several stages, including a Technical College, College of Technology, and Huddersfield Polytechnic, before becoming a university. The university has developed a strong reputation for teaching excellence, winning the Higher Education Academy Global Teaching Excellence Award in 2017 and achieving Teaching Excellence Framework Gold status in 2017 and again in 2023. Alongside teaching, it has increasingly focused on research quality, with over three quarters of its academic staff holding doctorates by 2022. The university is internationally recognised, attracting students from more than 130 countries and contributing significantly to the local economy. It has hosted notable cultural events and visitors, including royalty and former prime ministers. The current chancellor is George W. Buckley, appointed in 2020, and the vice-chancellor is Professor Bob Cryan, who has led the institution since 2007.
