COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mental Health Nursing program is structured over two years, combining theoretical study with practical experience to prepare students for professional practice as registered mental health nurses. In the first year, students focus on the essentials of mental health nursing, developing a strong foundation in understanding mental health conditions, therapeutic approaches, and patient-centered care. The second year builds on this foundation through a range of advanced and specialized modules. These include nursing art and science, medicines management, fundamentals of nursing practice, and mental health nursing practice, allowing students to develop comprehensive clinical skills and the ability to manage complex patient needs. Leadership and management are emphasized through modules on leading and managing mental health nursing, equipping students with the skills to coordinate care and contribute effectively to multidisciplinary teams. The program also highlights evidence-based practice, research, and innovation through modules on research and the evidence base for mental health nursing and imagination and innovation in nursing practice, fostering critical thinking and professional judgment. Assessment, including the final numeracy exam, ensures competence in essential clinical skills. Through a combination of classroom-based learning and hands-on placements, students gain the knowledge, confidence, and practical experience required to deliver safe, compassionate, and effective mental health care across a variety of settings.
