COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Screenwriting program is designed to provide students with an in-depth and practical understanding of screenwriting within the context of contemporary film production. Across the course, students develop essential skills in story development, character creation, dialogue, and narrative structure while gaining hands-on experience in film production techniques. The curriculum is structured to ensure that writing and production inform each other, allowing students to appreciate the practical realities of bringing a screenplay to life and to create work that is both creatively distinctive and production-ready. The program emphasizes research and critical thinking through the Investigative Minds module, which explores culture, industry practices, and professional contexts within film and media. Students also engage in project planning and development, honing their ability to take a concept from initial idea to fully realized script through the Finding the Story module. The culmination of the course is the Major Project in Screenwriting, a substantial piece of original work that demonstrates the student’s creative, technical, and professional skills. By combining theoretical insight, practical application, and industry-informed approaches, the course equips graduates with the expertise, creative confidence, and professional readiness to succeed in careers as screenwriters, storytellers, or in other roles within the global film and media industries.
