COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Illustration program offers a structured blend of creative exploration, technical development, and professional practice to prepare students for dynamic careers in the creative industries. The course begins with Design Studio Practice 1 (15 credits), which introduces advanced illustration concepts, encouraging experimentation with visual storytelling, composition, and media. Research Methods (15 credits) helps students develop analytical and contextual understanding, exploring how theory informs illustration practice. The Advanced Design Skills Lab (30 credits) enhances technical proficiency, enabling students to refine their craft using both traditional and digital techniques. In Design Studio Practice 2 (45 credits), students undertake more complex creative projects that challenge them to produce original, high-quality work aligned with industry standards. The Professional Design Practice module (15 credits) focuses on real-world applications, teaching essential professional skills such as client communication, self-promotion, and project management. The course culminates with the Major Study: Illustration (60 credits), an independent creative project that allows students to develop a cohesive and distinctive portfolio reflecting their personal artistic vision and professional goals. Together, these modules equip graduates with the creative confidence, technical expertise, and strategic understanding needed to succeed as illustrators in publishing, media, advertising, and other creative sectors.
