COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Folklore Studies at the University of Hertfordshire, the only such program in England, comprises six compulsory modules totaling 180 credits, designed to immerse students in the study of British folklore, legends, rituals, and beliefs. Contemporary Ritual and Tradition (30 credits) explores modern British practices and the material culture of rituals. The Folklorist’s Craft 1: Skills, Debates and Methodologies (15 credits) introduces students to research methodologies, including oral history collection and ethical considerations. The Folklorist’s Craft 2: Approaches, Dissertation and Dissemination (15 credits) focuses on advanced research skills, presentation techniques, and preparing a dissertation. Folklore of Landscape in Britain (30 credits) examines how legends intertwine with geographical and urban changes. Migration of Beliefs and Traditions (30 credits) investigates how stories and beliefs brought by diverse communities adapt to British culture. The Folklore Studies Dissertation (60 credits) allows students to conduct in-depth research on a chosen topic, such as witchcraft or local folklore, under expert supervision. This comprehensive curriculum equips graduates with the skills to analyze and preserve folklore, contributing to academic and cultural understanding of intangible heritage.
