COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Sports Studies degree offers a broad and practical understanding of sport, combining academic learning with hands-on experience to prepare students for careers in coaching, sport development, and high-performance sport. In the first year, students build a foundation by exploring the sports industry, understanding sports as social and global phenomena, and developing essential academic and practical skills. Modules cover sport development, coaching, practical delivery, operations, and media and communications, providing a well-rounded introduction to the field. In the second year, students deepen their knowledge with a focus on high-performance sport, ethics, research methods, and global perspectives of sports development. Optional modules such as coaching pedagogy, periodisation and planning, sport marketing, leadership, and event management allow students to tailor their studies to specific interests, while compulsory learning experiences and funding projects develop practical skills and professional understanding. The final year emphasizes professional practice and applied learning, including modules on professional practice, contemporary issues in sport, sport law and governance, and behaviour change for physical activity. Students also have opportunities to study abroad or undertake a placement year, while the program allows for research-focused work through the Sports Studies Research Dissertation or Experience Dissertation. The course equips students with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience needed to succeed in the dynamic and evolving sports industry.
