COURSE CURRICULUM

The social work degree is structured to provide a balanced mix of theoretical knowledge and practical experience, preparing students for professional practice in a variety of social care settings. In the first year, students develop a foundation in human growth and development, social work theories and methods, law and policy, inter-professional practice, and essential skills for practice. This year focuses on establishing core competencies, ethical awareness, and the ability to work collaboratively with service users and professionals from different sectors. In the second year, the course builds on these foundations by exploring ethics, values, and anti-discriminatory practice while offering opportunities for further skills development through practice-based learning. Students also examine specific practice contexts and deepen their understanding of law and policy as it applies to social work. Practical placements in diverse environments enable students to apply their learning, enhance critical thinking, and develop professional judgment. In the final year, the emphasis is on research-informed practice, advanced practice contexts, and extended practice learning, alongside inter-professional collaboration and research methods for social work. This year consolidates students’ ability to critically evaluate interventions, engage with complex social issues, and demonstrate leadership and professional autonomy. By the end of the course, graduates are well-prepared to enter the social work profession with practical expertise, theoretical understanding, and ethical competence.
