COURSE CURRICULUM

The Physics degree at the University of Hertfordshire provides a thorough grounding in both classical and modern physics, combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience to prepare students for careers in research, technology, and related industries. In the first year, students develop core skills through modules such as Special Relativity and Quantum Physics, Experimental Physics, The Physical Universe, Mathematical Methods, Applications of Calculus, and Computational Modelling, supported by small group tutorials to reinforce learning. The second year builds on this foundation with advanced topics including Electromagnetism, Optics and Lasers, Thermodynamics, Quantum Mechanics, Multivariable Calculus, Motion and Tensors, and optional modules such as Physics of the Solar System, Extra-Solar Planets, Plasma Physics and Fusion Reactors, and Programming. Career Planning and Development modules support professional readiness. In the final year, students explore higher-level topics such as Condensed States of Matter, The Physics of Elementary Particles, Geophysical Fluid Dynamics, Star Formation and Evolution, and Space Dynamics, with optional modules including Foundations of Cosmology, Quantum Optics and Information Theory, Applied Photonics, and Computational Physics. The Physics Project and Investigative Skills module enables independent research and practical application of knowledge, while optional professional placements or study abroad provide additional industry experience.
