COURSE CURRICULUM

The Pharmacology degree at Hertfordshire provides a comprehensive foundation in biomedical science, preparing students for careers in healthcare, pharmaceutical research, or further study. In the first year, students build essential knowledge in molecular biology, genetics, core biochemistry, cell and microbiology, and human physiology with pharmacology, alongside practical and transferable skills. Optional modules in chemistry, molecular structure, and bioinformatics allow students to tailor their learning to specific interests. In the second year, the focus shifts toward applied pharmacology and disease understanding, covering principles of immunology, biology of disease, biochemistry for pharmacology, pharmacology itself, genes and genomes, and cell and molecular biology. Students also gain experience in bioscience research methods and have opportunities for work placements, giving them practical insight into real-world laboratory and research environments. In the final year, students undertake a project and study therapeutic pharmacology, integrating their knowledge and skills to address complex scientific problems and develop solutions relevant to medicine and patient care. Throughout the degree, students are guided by experienced tutors, with support for scientific writing, data interpretation, and communication, and benefit from peer collaboration. The program combines rigorous academic study with hands-on practical experience, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for professional roles or advanced study in pharmacology, biomedical science, or related fields.
