COURSE CURRICULUM

The mental health nursing degree provides a comprehensive blend of theoretical learning and practical experience to prepare students for a rewarding career in supporting individuals with mental health challenges. In the first year, students develop a strong foundation through modules covering key concepts, theories, and debates in mental health nursing, communication and relationship management skills, therapeutic communication, and the fundamentals of health and wellbeing. They also gain hands-on experience in professional practice and develop essential academic and professional skills. In the second year, the focus shifts to building expertise in mental health nursing through modules on developing health and wellbeing, essentials of mental health nursing, research and the evidence base for practice, and advanced clinical placements that enhance practical competencies. The final year emphasizes leadership, innovation, and autonomy in practice. Students study inter-professional education, medicines management, and the principles of leading and managing mental health nursing care, while completing extensive practice placements to consolidate their skills. Across all three years, the program equips students to assess, support, and advocate for individuals experiencing mental health difficulties, considering their social, cultural, and psychological needs. Graduates emerge prepared to provide evidence-based, compassionate care across a range of settings, from hospitals to community services, with strong professional and employment prospects in a demanding yet highly rewarding field.
