COURSE CURRICULUM

The learning disability nursing degree is designed to prepare students for a rewarding career supporting individuals with learning disabilities, promoting their health, wellbeing, and independence. In the first year, students develop foundational skills in communication, relationship management, and professional practice, while gaining an understanding of the lived experiences of people with learning disabilities. This combination of theoretical knowledge and practical experience ensures that students are well-prepared to provide person-centred care from the start. In the second year, the course focuses on developing students’ understanding of physical health needs, supporting transitions from childhood to adult services, and applying research in nursing practice. Students also continue to gain hands-on experience in diverse clinical and community settings, further enhancing their professional competence. The final year emphasizes leadership, management, and evidence-based practice, preparing graduates to take on advanced roles and influence positive outcomes for individuals with learning disabilities. Additional focus is placed on mental health, recognising the complex needs of those who experience mental health challenges alongside learning disabilities. By the end of the program, students have the skills, knowledge, and professional confidence to deliver compassionate, inclusive, and effective care, advocate for patients, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of people with learning disabilities across a range of healthcare and community settings.
