COURSE CURRICULUM

The children’s nursing degree provides a comprehensive combination of theoretical learning and practical experience to prepare students for a professional career caring for children and young people. In the first year, students focus on developing core skills in communication, relationship management, and professional practice, alongside foundational knowledge in health, wellbeing, anatomy, and physiology. They also begin clinical practice, gaining essential hands-on experience in caring for children and young people in various healthcare settings. The second year builds on this foundation, offering opportunities to develop health and wellbeing further, promote health for children, and engage in specialised areas such as neonatal care, out-of-hospital care, and paediatric cancer. Students continue to gain practical experience through placements and are introduced to research skills relevant to children and young people’s nursing practice. The final year emphasizes advanced professional skills, leadership, and management, with a focus on applying anatomy and physiology to paediatric nursing. Students consolidate their clinical practice through extended placements, ensuring readiness for independent practice. Throughout the degree, there is a strong emphasis on evidence-based care, innovation, and inter-professional collaboration. Graduates leave equipped with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to provide safe, compassionate, and effective care, capable of meeting the diverse needs of children, young people, and their families in hospital and community settings.
