COURSE CURRICULUM

The Geography and Environment degree offers a comprehensive and flexible curriculum designed to equip students with the knowledge, practical skills, and analytical tools needed to understand and address contemporary environmental and geographical challenges. In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge through core modules in field research, climate change, ecology, human geographies, Earth systems, and society, alongside professional and academic skills that prepare them for independent study and practical work. The second year allows students to build on this foundation with modules in fieldwork, GIS fundamentals, research design, and environmental processes, while optional modules explore population dynamics, social and spatial inequalities, aquatic ecology, and catchment to coast studies, offering a balance between human and physical geography. In the final year, students engage with advanced topics such as glacial processes, sustainable futures, natural hazards, urban development, and geopolitics, alongside professional GIS and Earth observation techniques. The dissertation provides an opportunity to conduct independent research in a chosen area, applying field, analytical, and technical skills developed throughout the course.
