COURSE CURRICULUM

The Environmental Management and Ecology degree provides a comprehensive program that combines theoretical knowledge with practical skills to prepare students for careers in environmental science, conservation, and management. In the first year, students develop a strong foundation through core modules including Introduction to Field Research, Climate Change and the Climate Crisis, Understanding Ecology, Contemporary Human Geographies, Earth’s Dynamic Systems, The Living Planet, Society and Place, and Investigations in Geography and Environment. These modules introduce students to ecological principles, human-environment interactions, and essential research techniques, while Academic and Professional Skills modules build study and workplace competencies. The second year focuses on advancing practical skills and research capabilities, with compulsory modules such as Fieldwork in Geography and Environment, GIS Fundamentals, Geographical and Environmental Research Design, Practical Conservation, and Advanced Conservation, alongside optional modules like Ice Age Earth, Catchment to Coast, Food, Society and Development, Aquatic Ecology, and GIS and Remote Sensing. Students gain hands-on experience in field research, conservation practices, and geospatial analysis, enhancing their employability. In the final year, students undertake a Dissertation in Geography and Environment and have the opportunity to specialize through optional modules including Glacial Processes, Sustainable Futures, Natural Hazards and Resilience in the UK, Advanced GIS, Reconstructing Anthropocene Environments, Earth Observation, Professional GIS, Arctic and Alpine Environments, Contemporary Conservation Challenges, and Global Species Management, consolidating expertise in environmental management and preparing graduates to address complex ecological and environmental challenges.
