COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Data Science degree is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in mathematics, statistics, computing, and data analysis, combined with practical experience in handling complex datasets. In the first year, students build essential skills through modules such as Mathematical Methods, Probability and Statistics, Linear Algebra, Computational Modelling, Principles of Data Science, IT Literacy and Core Skills, Data Science Laboratory, Small Group Tutorials, and Principles of Data Presentation. These modules establish the analytical, computational, and data-handling capabilities needed for more advanced study. In the second year, students progress to more specialised topics, including Statistical Modelling, Information Theory, Big Data and High-Performance Computing, Blockchains and Cryptocurrencies, and Introduction to Machine Learning and Neural Networks, alongside practical work in Data Science Laboratory and Small Group Tutorials. Optional modules such as Programming, Game Theory, Financial Markets, Investment Portfolios, Numerical Methods, and Professional Teaching Skills allow students to tailor their learning. In the third year, students focus on advanced concepts and applications, including Linear Modelling, Multivariate Statistics, Next Generation Data Science, Advanced Machine Learning and Neural Networks, Computer Vision and Natural Language Processing, and the Data Science Project. Opportunities for a professional placement or a year abroad provide real-world experience. The program integrates theory with hands-on practice, preparing graduates for careers in data analysis, AI development, business intelligence, and other data-driven industries.
