COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc Astrophysics degree combines a strong foundation in physics and mathematics with specialized study of the cosmos, preparing students for advanced research and professional careers in astrophysics and space science. In the first year, students build essential skills through modules such as Special Relativity and Quantum Physics, The Physical Universe, Experimental Physics, Mathematical Methods, Applications of Calculus, and Computational Modelling, supported by small group tutorials. The second year introduces more focused topics, including Electromagnetism, Optics and Lasers, Thermodynamics, Physics of the Solar System, Extra-Solar Planets, and Quantum Mechanics, alongside opportunities to study Plasma Physics, Differential Equations, and machine learning applications, as well as career planning and development. In the final year, students engage with advanced astrophysical topics, including Star Formation and Evolution, Foundations of Cosmology, The Physics of Elementary Particles, and the Physics of Astronomical Spectra. Optional modules allow exploration of Space Dynamics, Rocket Performance and Propulsion, Quantum Optics, and computational and numerical methods. Central to the degree is the Astrophysics Project and Investigative Skills module, where students conduct original research under expert supervision, applying observational, theoretical, and computational techniques. Opportunities for placements or a year abroad further enhance practical experience. Overall, the program equips students with strong analytical, computational, and observational skills, preparing them for careers in research, academia, space industry, and related scientific fields.
