COURSE CURRICULUM

The BEng Civil Engineering degree at the University of Hertfordshire provides a comprehensive education in the principles and practice of civil engineering, preparing students for professional careers in designing, constructing, and maintaining infrastructure. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge in civil engineering materials, practical geology, site surveying, fluid mechanics, hydraulics, and structural analysis, alongside essential mathematics and sustainable construction principles. The second year builds on this foundation with more advanced study in civil engineering materials, mechanics of materials, hydrology, soil mechanics, surveying, highway engineering, and structural design, as well as digital tools for civil engineering and construction management. Students gain practical experience in applying theory to real-world problems, strengthening their technical and analytical skills. In the final year, students can choose to undertake a year abroad or placement, enhancing their global perspective and professional experience. Advanced modules cover geotechnical design, structural analysis and design, flood hydraulics, highway and transportation engineering, and sustainable engineering. The program culminates with a major industry group design project and an individual BEng project, allowing students to apply their learning to complex engineering challenges. Graduates leave with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience to pursue careers as civil, structural, geotechnical, or environmental engineers and to work toward chartered engineer status.
