COURSE CURRICULUM

The BEng (Hons) Automotive Engineering degree at the University of Hertfordshire provides students with a comprehensive understanding of modern vehicle design, engineering principles, and emerging technologies in the automotive sector. In the first year, students build a foundation in engineering mathematics, statics and dynamics, electrical science, applied design, programming, and mechatronic systems, alongside the fundamentals of automotive engineering and professional skills development. The second year focuses on specialized topics such as automotive electronics and control systems, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, materials in engineering, sustainable automotive design, dynamics and vibrations, and vehicle structures and design. These modules develop technical competence, problem-solving ability, and creative engineering skills needed to tackle complex automotive challenges. In the final year, students engage in advanced areas including vibration, noise and vehicle dynamics, automotive powertrain technology, connected and autonomous vehicles, renewable energy and environmental considerations, vehicle design and body engineering, and lean manufacturing and supply chains. Practical application is reinforced through individual projects and the option to undertake an industrial placement or study abroad, providing real-world experience and global exposure. Accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the course prepares graduates for professional roles in vehicle design, production, testing, and research, as well as a pathway toward chartered engineer status, equipping them to innovate in a rapidly evolving automotive industry.
