COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Social Sciences degree at the University of Hertfordshire offers an interdisciplinary approach to understanding society, culture, politics, and social issues, equipping students with the knowledge and skills to address real-world challenges. In the first year, students build a foundational understanding of society through modules such as Media in a Changing World, Crime, Control, and the City, Activism and Change, Crime and Culture, Sociology in Practice, Understanding the Body, The American Century, 1900-2000, and Revolutions, Riots, and Social Justice 1776-Present. These modules introduce key concepts in sociology, history, culture, and social justice while fostering critical thinking and analytical skills. The second year allows students to broaden their knowledge and specialise in areas of interest, with optional modules covering applied sociology, policy problems, health and activism, religion, work, global languages, the state in the 21st century, and British imperialism. Students also develop professional writing skills to enhance their employability. In the final year, advanced modules explore complex social issues, including Identities in Film and Media, Criminal Justice or Social Injustice, Everyday Violence, Gender and Sexuality, Environmental Crises, Race and Racism, States of Emergency, and a Sociology Dissertation. The program combines theory, research, and practical application, preparing graduates for careers in social research, public policy, activism, media, and related fields.
