COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Sociology and Psychology degree at the University of Hertfordshire provides a multidisciplinary approach to understanding human behaviour, society, and social change. In the first year, students build a foundational knowledge through modules such as Sociology in Practice, Understanding the Body, Skills for Psychologists, People in Society, Understanding Child Development, Inner Workings of the Mind, The American Century, 1900-2000, and Revolutions, Riots, and Social Justice 1776-Present. These modules introduce students to key concepts in sociology, psychology, history, and social justice, while developing analytical and research skills. In the second year, students can broaden and specialise their knowledge through optional modules including Applied Sociology, Medicine Matters, Religion, Faith and Society, Sociology at Work, language studies, and British imperialism, alongside compulsory Social and Developmental Psychology. This year allows students to explore the connections between society and individual behaviour, as well as apply theoretical understanding to practical contexts. The final year focuses on advanced and specialised topics, with optional modules such as Identities in Film and Media, Criminal Justice or Social Injustice, Everyday Violence, Gender and Sexuality, Environmental Crises, Race and Racism, States of Emergency, and a Sociology Dissertation, alongside the compulsory module Health Psychology. The program develops critical thinking, research proficiency, and a nuanced understanding of social and psychological processes, preparing graduates for careers in research, public policy, health, and social services.
