COURSE CURRICULUM

The Philosophy degree at the University of Hertfordshire offers a comprehensive and intellectually stimulating exploration of key areas of philosophical thought, from ethics and metaphysics to mind, knowledge, and social and political philosophy. In the first year, students are introduced to foundational concepts, including reason and persuasion, the meaning of life, ethics, philosophy of fiction, religion, and contemporary issues such as science fiction, philosophy, and religion. This grounding develops critical thinking, analytical skills, and the ability to engage with complex ideas. In the second year, the course expands into more specialized areas such as philosophy of mind, artificial intelligence, knowledge and discovery, philosophy of art, logic, and employability skills, allowing students to deepen their understanding and apply philosophical inquiry to contemporary and practical issues. The third year emphasizes independent research, with opportunities to undertake a philosophy project or short project, and explore topics such as political philosophy, philosophy of education, philosophy of psychology, Wittgenstein, Nietzsche, and philosophy of music, race, and gender. Students may also take a year abroad or participate in the Humanities Placement Year. Throughout the degree, emphasis is placed on developing critical reasoning, creative thinking, and the ability to construct and communicate well-reasoned arguments, equipping graduates with skills applicable to a wide range of careers and further study.
