COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA History course at the University of Hertfordshire provides a comprehensive and flexible study of history, allowing students to explore a wide range of periods, regions, and themes. In the first year, students build foundational skills through the Historians' Toolkit while examining diverse topics such as Faith, Magic, and Medicine 1500-1800, Imperial Trade and Global Connections, and Global Gender History. The second year offers opportunities to investigate historical interpretation and media, including modules on Propaganda in 20th Century War and Politics, Making a Historical Documentary, and Postcards from the Empire, alongside studies of family life, medicine, and crime. In the final year, students can further specialise and pursue advanced research through modules such as Bodies and Sexuality in the Early Modern Period, Italy and Fascism, Popular Protest in Britain, and the Final Year History Dissertation. Additional options like Witch-Bottles to Wishing-Wells and the study of the Arab-Israeli conflict allow students to explore material culture and contemporary global issues. The program also offers practical experience through the Humanities Placement Year and opportunities for study abroad. Throughout the course, students develop critical thinking, research, and analytical skills while engaging with global perspectives, preparing them for careers in heritage, education, research, and beyond, combining academic depth with practical application.
