COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA in English Literature is a three-year program designed to develop students into critical readers and literary scholars. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in literary analysis and interpretation through compulsory modules such as texts up close, literary tradition and experimentation, adventures in literature, modern literature from around the world, contemporary writing, US literature and culture, Gothic and Romantic studies, and history on the page, stage, and screen. This year introduces students to a wide range of periods, genres, and global perspectives, fostering analytical skills and cultural awareness. In the second year, the program deepens understanding with compulsory modules including ways of reading, the age of transition in Victorian literature, revisiting the Renaissance, and British identity and Enlightenment culture, alongside optional modules covering twentieth-century literature, contemporary British society, and US literature. Students further develop interpretive and critical thinking skills while exploring literature in historical, social, and political contexts. The final year emphasizes specialized and independent study, with optional modules in literary adaptation, visual arts, children’s literature, late Victorian and Edwardian texts, African-American literature, twenty-first century American writing, ecological futures, and Euro-crime narratives, alongside opportunities for research projects, placements, and a year abroad. The program equips students with analytical, research, and communication skills, preparing them for careers in writing, publishing, education, media, and cultural industries.
