COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA in English Literature and Creative Writing is a three-year program designed to develop students as both critical readers and creative writers. In the first year, students build a foundation in literary analysis and creative practice through compulsory modules such as the writer’s art, texts up close, literary tradition and experimentation, and adventures in literature, while optional modules offer opportunities to explore genre fiction, writing for the screen, modern literature from around the world, contemporary writing, US literature, Gothic and Romantic studies, and historical perspectives on literature and performance. The second year deepens both literary and creative skills, with compulsory modules including ways of reading, revisiting the Renaissance, British identity and Enlightenment culture, poetry, prose and publishing, and real stories well told. Optional modules provide specialized study in twentieth-century literature, American literature, literary theory, writing for the stage, poetry, short stories, literature at work, and social and cultural perspectives in British literature. In the final year, students focus on advanced creative practice and specialized literary study. Options include creative writing projects in poetry, prose, and script, writing for serial drama and popular fiction, as well as literary analysis of children’s literature, late Victorian and Edwardian literature, young adult fiction, adaptation studies, and contemporary American writing. The course also includes a compulsory module on writing and reality and opportunities to explore professional aspects of the literary field, preparing graduates for careers in writing, publishing, media, or further study.
