ABOUT UNIVERSITY
The University of Hertfordshire (UH), located in Hatfield, United Kingdom, originated as Hatfield Technical College in 1948, established to train aerospace engineers for the local industry. It became Hatfield College of Technology in 1958 and was recognized as one of 25 Colleges of Technology in 1959. In 1969, it transitioned into Hatfield Polytechnic, expanding its academic scope, and in 1992 it was granted university status, officially becoming the University of Hertfordshire. The university now operates mainly from two campuses, College Lane and de Havilland, and comprises nine schools including Business, Computer Science, Creative Arts, Education, Health and Social Work, Humanities, Law, Life and Medical Sciences, and Engineering. As of 2022, UH had around 32,000 students, including over 13,000 international students from 100 countries, making it one of the most globally diverse universities in England outside London. The institution employs over 3,400 staff and reported an annual income of £317.5 million in 2021–22. Over the decades, UH has undergone significant growth and modernization, opening new facilities such as the de Havilland Campus and Hertfordshire Sports Village in 2003, and establishing schools for Film, Music and Media, and Pharmacy. It has played a leading role in education innovation, sponsoring technical colleges and promoting research in robotics, health, and sustainability. The university has received recognition for its commitment to equality, being one of the first institutions to receive the Race Equality Charter in 2015. UH continues to engage in regional and international collaboration, most notably hosting the European Maccabi Youth Games in 2024. With a strong academic reputation, global community, and a legacy rooted in technological education, the University of Hertfordshire stands as a major contributor to research, education, and social progress in the UK and beyond.
