COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Strength and Conditioning curriculum provides a comprehensive combination of sport science, athlete assessment, coaching, performance programming, research, and professional practice to prepare students for careers in high-performance sport and athletic development. All students complete Research Methods, which develops advanced knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research design, scientific investigation, ethical practice, literature evaluation, and evidence-based decision-making, enabling students to critically assess research and apply scientific findings to professional strength and conditioning practice. Supervised Work Placement provides valuable practical experience within professional sporting environments, allowing students to work alongside experienced practitioners while developing coaching, leadership, communication, athlete monitoring, and performance support skills in real-world settings. Data Handling and Analysis focuses on collecting, managing, interpreting, and analysing performance data using statistical methods to evaluate athlete development, monitor training effectiveness, identify performance trends, and support evidence-based coaching decisions. Students also complete an Independent Project, undertaking an original research investigation or applied performance study that enables them to explore a specialist topic within strength and conditioning while applying advanced research methods and critical analysis to real-world performance challenges. Assessment and Programming for Elite Sport develops expertise in athlete testing, physical profiling, needs analysis, programme design, and the development of evidence-based training interventions tailored to elite athletes across different sports. Students learn to prescribe strength, power, speed, endurance, flexibility, and injury prevention programmes that optimise performance while supporting long-term athlete development. Skill Acquisition for Coaching Science and Delivery explores the principles of motor learning, coaching science, movement analysis, communication, feedback strategies, and athlete development, enabling students to design and deliver effective coaching sessions that enhance technical skills and performance. Contemporary Topics in Strength and Conditioning examines current developments and emerging trends within the profession, including advanced training methodologies, recovery strategies, sports technology, wearable performance monitoring systems, applied biomechanics, performance analytics, and innovations influencing modern strength and conditioning practice. Throughout the programme, students strengthen leadership, coaching, analytical thinking, problem-solving, communication, research, and evidence-based decision-making skills while integrating scientific knowledge with practical experience. Overall, the curriculum prepares graduates for careers as Strength and Conditioning Coaches, High-Performance Coaches, Athletic Development Specialists, Performance Scientists, Sports Scientists, Rehabilitation Performance Practitioners, Performance Consultants, and Elite Sport Support Professionals working with professional sports clubs, national governing bodies, universities, private performance centres, military organisations, rehabilitation clinics, and research institutions, while also providing an excellent foundation for professional accreditation, doctoral research, and continued career development in strength and conditioning.
