COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Strength and Conditioning curriculum combines advanced sports science, performance analysis, research, data analytics, and practical professional experience to prepare students for careers in athletic performance and strength and conditioning. All students complete Match and Notational Analysis, which develops the skills to observe, record, and evaluate individual and team performance using systematic performance analysis techniques. Students learn how to identify technical and tactical trends, assess player and team performance, and provide evidence-based feedback that supports coaching decisions and athlete development. Research Methods equips students with advanced knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research design, scientific investigation, ethical practice, literature evaluation, and evidence-based decision-making, enabling them to critically assess current research and conduct independent investigations. Supervised Work Placement provides valuable practical experience within professional sporting environments, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge while developing coaching, communication, leadership, athlete monitoring, and performance support skills under the guidance of experienced practitioners. Data Handling and Analysis focuses on collecting, managing, interpreting, and analysing performance data using statistical techniques to evaluate training outcomes, monitor athlete development, reduce injury risk, and improve sporting performance. Data Programming and Visualization for Sports Performance Analysis develops technical skills in programming, data processing, visualisation, and the use of modern analytical software to transform complex performance data into meaningful reports that support coaches, athletes, and sports organisations in making informed decisions. Students also complete an Independent Project, undertaking an original research study or applied performance project that enables them to investigate a specialist topic within strength and conditioning or sports performance while applying advanced research methods, critical analysis, and professional practice. Throughout the programme, students strengthen expertise in performance monitoring, athlete assessment, data interpretation, communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, research, and evidence-based coaching. The curriculum integrates scientific knowledge with applied learning, industry engagement, and practical placement experience, ensuring graduates develop the professional competencies expected within elite and community sport environments. Overall, the programme prepares graduates for careers as Strength and Conditioning Coaches, Sports Performance Analysts, Performance Scientists, Athlete Development Specialists, High-Performance Coaches, Sports Data Analysts, Rehabilitation Performance Practitioners, and Performance Consultants working with professional sports clubs, national governing bodies, universities, private performance centres, sports technology companies, and research organisations. The curriculum also provides a strong foundation for professional accreditation, further postgraduate research, and continued career development within strength and conditioning, sports performance analysis, and applied sport science.
