COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Game Development curriculum is designed to combine advanced technical knowledge, creative design, collaborative development, and commercial project experience to prepare students for professional careers in the modern games industry. The programme is built around a series of practical projects that reflect real-world game development workflows and industry practices. Students begin with the Collaborative Project, where they work in multidisciplinary teams alongside designers, programmers, and artists to plan, develop, and deliver a complete game project while strengthening communication, teamwork, project management, and problem-solving skills. This experience is extended in the Extended Collaborative Project, which involves larger and more complex development challenges, allowing students to apply advanced production techniques, manage project lifecycles, and gain experience using professional development pipelines similar to those found in commercial game studios. The Individual Commercial Project enables students to independently design and develop a commercially focused game or interactive application, demonstrating technical expertise, creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurial thinking while building a professional portfolio suitable for employment. Students can further personalise their learning through a range of specialist optional modules. Advanced Environmental Design focuses on creating realistic and immersive game environments using modern modelling, lighting, rendering, and optimisation techniques. Serious Games explores the design and development of games created for education, healthcare, training, business, and social impact, demonstrating how game technologies can solve real-world challenges beyond entertainment. Procedural Generation Algorithms introduces advanced programming techniques that automatically generate game content such as landscapes, levels, characters, and assets, improving efficiency and gameplay variety. Machine Learning and Data Analytics examines the application of artificial intelligence, player behaviour analysis, predictive modelling, and data-driven decision-making within game development to create more intelligent, adaptive, and engaging gaming experiences. Throughout the programme, students develop expertise in game programming, technical art, design, collaboration, innovation, and commercial game production while gaining practical experience through industry-inspired projects. Overall, the curriculum prepares graduates for careers such as Game Developer, Gameplay Programmer, Game Designer, Technical Artist, Environment Artist, AI Programmer, Graphics Programmer, Tools Developer, Level Designer, Simulation Developer, Virtual Reality Developer, Interactive Media Specialist, and Technical Consultant within game studios, digital media companies, simulation industries, education technology organisations, and other creative technology sectors.
