COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Forensic Psychology curriculum provides a comprehensive combination of psychological theory, criminal justice, research, assessment, and professional practice to prepare students for careers in forensic psychology and progression towards professional training accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS). All students complete Advanced Research Methods, which develops expertise in qualitative and quantitative research design, statistical analysis, ethical research practice, critical appraisal, and evidence-based investigation, enabling students to conduct high-quality psychological research. Students also undertake a Dissertation, completing an independent research project that applies advanced research methods and critical analysis to investigate a significant issue within forensic psychology. Psychology in the Legal Process explores the application of psychology within criminal and civil justice systems, examining legal decision-making, eyewitness testimony, jury behaviour, expert witness practice, interviewing techniques, and the role of psychologists in legal proceedings. Offenders: Causes, Assessment and Intervention examines the psychological, biological, and social factors associated with offending behaviour while developing knowledge of offender assessment, risk evaluation, rehabilitation programmes, behaviour change, and evidence-based interventions used within prisons and community settings. Vulnerability and Victims in Forensic Contexts focuses on the psychological impact of crime, trauma, victimisation, safeguarding, vulnerability, and the support needs of victims and vulnerable populations across forensic and criminal justice environments. Developing the Forensic Practitioner prepares students for professional practice by strengthening ethical decision-making, reflective practice, communication, multidisciplinary teamwork, professional standards, and the critical evaluation of psychological evidence used in forensic settings. Police and Investigative Psychology explores the application of psychological principles to policing and criminal investigations, covering offender profiling, investigative interviewing, intelligence gathering, decision-making, witness interviewing, deception detection, and behavioural analysis. Throughout the programme, students develop advanced analytical, research, communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills while engaging with current forensic psychology research and professional practice. The curriculum emphasises evidence-based practice, ethical responsibility, and reflective learning, ensuring graduates are well prepared to work effectively within criminal justice and forensic environments. Overall, the programme provides an excellent academic foundation for Stage 2 professional training in Forensic Psychology and prepares graduates for careers in prisons, probation services, police organisations, secure hospitals, youth justice services, victim support agencies, rehabilitation services, research institutions, government departments, charities, and criminal justice organisations, while also supporting progression to doctoral research and advanced professional practice.
