COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Applied Ecology curriculum combines practical ecological training, conservation science, field research, spatial analysis, and professional development to prepare students for careers in ecology, environmental management, and biodiversity conservation. All students complete Ecological Skills for Professional Practice, which develops the essential competencies required by professional ecologists, including species identification, habitat assessment, ecological surveying, environmental monitoring, field data collection, report writing, professional ethics, and health and safety practices. Students also complete a Dissertation, undertaking an independent research project that applies ecological theory, practical fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and research methods to investigate a significant ecological or conservation issue while developing advanced analytical, problem-solving, and scientific communication skills. Students can personalise their studies through a range of specialist optional modules. Practical Ecological Methods provides hands-on experience with industry-standard ecological survey techniques, sampling methods, biodiversity monitoring, habitat assessment, and environmental data collection. Ecological Interactions explores the relationships between organisms and their environments, examining ecological processes such as competition, predation, pollination, population dynamics, ecosystem functioning, and biodiversity conservation. Field Ecology focuses on practical field investigations, allowing students to develop species identification skills, conduct ecological surveys, and collect environmental data across diverse habitats using professional ecological techniques. Applied Conservation examines conservation biology, habitat restoration, protected area management, species recovery programmes, environmental policy, and strategies for addressing biodiversity loss. Nature-based Solutions for Environmental Challenges explores sustainable approaches to tackling climate change, ecosystem degradation, flood management, carbon storage, and environmental resilience through ecosystem-based conservation practices. Citizen Science and Public Engagement investigates how community participation, public involvement, and collaborative research contribute to ecological monitoring, conservation, environmental education, and policy development. Fundamentals of Conservation GIS introduces Geographic Information Systems (GIS), spatial mapping, environmental data management, habitat mapping, and geographic analysis used in ecological planning and conservation. Advanced Spatial Analysis develops expertise in advanced GIS applications, remote sensing, spatial modelling, landscape ecology, and environmental decision-making. Throughout the programme, students gain extensive practical field and laboratory experience while strengthening research, analytical, communication, and project management skills. Overall, the curriculum prepares graduates for careers as Ecologists, Conservation Scientists, Environmental Consultants, Biodiversity Officers, Wildlife Surveyors, Habitat Restoration Specialists, GIS Analysts, Environmental Managers, Sustainability Consultants, Research Scientists, and Conservation Advisors across environmental consultancies, government agencies, conservation organisations, research institutions, charities, and international environmental bodies, while also providing a strong foundation for doctoral research and professional accreditation.
