COURSE CURRICULUM
The Master of Architecture programme for the 2026/27 academic year provides students with advanced knowledge and practical experience in architectural design, research, sustainability, and professional practice while encouraging innovative responses to contemporary social and environmental challenges. The curriculum consists of compulsory modules including Design and Research Methods, Ethical Design and Practice, Architecture Theory and Research Methods, Investigative Study, Retrofit and Adaptive Design, Research Through Design, Sustainable Design and Technology, Professional Practice, and Design Thesis. These modules develop students’ abilities to critically investigate architectural issues and create informed, creative, and socially responsible design solutions. A major emphasis of the programme is placed on independent research and the development of original design thinking, allowing students to formulate their own research questions and explore them through architectural investigation and experimentation. Through the Design and Research Methods module, students develop the skills necessary to critically analyse architectural, historical, and theoretical precedents while examining projects from architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design. Research activities are closely connected to important contemporary themes including environmental sustainability, diversity and inclusion, and cultural and social value, ensuring that students engage with the broader responsibilities of architectural practice. Students use a range of methods to communicate and document their research, including written analysis, sketches, architectural drawings, digital visualisations, physical models, and design prototypes. The programme also focuses on retrofit strategies, adaptive reuse, sustainable technologies, and ethical professional practice, preparing students to contribute positively to future built environments and communities. The Design Thesis allows students to undertake a substantial independent project that demonstrates advanced design, research, and technical capabilities while reflecting their personal architectural interests and ambitions. Module code AD7701 forms an important component of the programme and supports the development of critical thinking, professional judgement, and design excellence. Graduates leave prepared for careers in architectural practice, research, urban design, and other emerging spatial and built environment disciplines.
