COURSE CURRICULUM
The MA Landscape Architecture is a one-year full-time postgraduate programme designed to develop advanced knowledge and professional expertise in landscape design, planning, sustainability, and environmental management. The course prepares students to address contemporary challenges facing urban and natural environments while developing the practical and analytical skills required for professional practice within the landscape architecture sector. Students study a range of compulsory modules including Landscape Professional Practice, Landscape Design Studio, Landscape Planning Studio, Ecological Landscape Design, Research Methods for Built Environment, and Our Urban Futures. These modules provide an understanding of professional standards, project management, landscape planning strategies, ecological principles, and sustainable design approaches that respond to issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, urban growth, and environmental resilience. Through studio-based learning and practical projects, students develop creative design solutions that balance environmental, social, and economic considerations while addressing the needs of communities and stakeholders. The programme places strong emphasis on ecological thinking and sustainable development, encouraging students to create landscapes that support both human wellbeing and environmental health. Research Methods for Built Environment develops the investigative and analytical skills required for evidence-based design and professional decision-making, while Our Urban Futures explores the evolving relationship between cities, communities, and natural systems in a rapidly changing world. Students can further tailor their studies through optional modules including Masters Dissertation or Major Project, Investigative Design Dissertation, Applied Conservation, Nature-based Solutions for Environmental Challenges, and Fundamentals of Conservation GIS. These options allow students to specialise in areas such as conservation, environmental management, geographic information systems, and research-led design practice. The programme combines theoretical understanding with practical application, enabling graduates to develop the confidence, creativity, and professional competence needed for careers in landscape architecture, environmental consultancy, urban planning, conservation, and sustainable development. Through this blend of design, research, and ecological awareness, students are prepared to contribute positively to the future of landscapes and communities at local, national, and global levels.
