COURSE CURRICULUM
The Zoology programme provides students with a comprehensive understanding of animal biology, behaviour, physiology, and evolution through a combination of laboratory work, field research, and independent scientific investigation. During the first stage of study, students complete core modules including Diversity and Evolution, Fundamentals of Ecology, Biochemistry, Animal Physiology, Methods in Biology, Ethics in Biosciences, and Field Research Training. These modules introduce the diversity and classification of life, the principles of natural selection, evolution, adaptation, genetics, and ecological interactions while developing practical laboratory, research, and analytical skills essential for biological sciences. Students also gain an understanding of ethical issues associated with bioscience research and field investigations. In the second stage, students undertake specialist modules including Animal Behaviour, Mammalian Reproduction, Anatomy and Biomechanics, and Research Skills and Proposal Development for Zoology, alongside optional subjects such as Internship, Biogeography, Microbiology, Marine Ecology, Field Research, Conservation in Captivity, and Monitoring and Management of Habitats and Species. Students explore how animals interact with one another and their environments through topics including feeding strategies, reproduction, parental care, sociobiology, altruism, and predation while conducting their own behavioural research projects and considering the ethical and legal aspects of zoological studies. In the final stage of the programme, students complete Evolution and Behaviour and the Zoology Dissertation while selecting optional modules such as Professional Experience, Field Placement, Avian Biology, Population and Community Ecology, and Wildlife Disease. The dissertation provides an opportunity to undertake original research on a zoological topic of personal interest, involving data collection, analysis, and interpretation while developing advanced skills in critical thinking, communication, problem solving, and project management. Overall, the programme prepares graduates for careers in zoological research, wildlife conservation, environmental consultancy, animal management, ecological monitoring, and postgraduate study by combining scientific knowledge with practical experience and professional development.
