COURSE CURRICULUM

The Wildlife Conservation Biology programme provides students with a comprehensive understanding of biodiversity, ecology, conservation science, and the challenges associated with protecting wildlife in a rapidly changing world. In the first stage of study, students complete core modules including Diversity and Evolution, Fundamentals of Ecology, Animal Physiology, Methods in Biology, Managing Valued Environments, Ethics in Biosciences, and Field Research Training. These modules introduce the origins and diversity of life, biological classification, natural selection, adaptation, genetics, and ecological principles while developing practical skills in scientific methods, environmental management, and ethical decision making. Students gain a strong foundation in understanding the relationships between species and ecosystems and the impacts of human activities on biodiversity. In the second stage, students study specialised modules including Research Skills and Proposal Development for Wildlife Conservation Biology, Conservation in Captivity, Wildlife Crime, and Monitoring and Management of Habitats and Species, alongside optional modules such as Internship, Biogeography, Animal Behaviour, Marine Ecology, Field Research, and Geographic Information Systems. Students develop expertise in hypothesis testing, statistical analysis, and research design while examining conservation strategies, habitat management, wildlife protection, and the illegal exploitation of species. These modules prepare students for independent research and professional practice within conservation environments. In the final stage, students complete the Wildlife Conservation Biology Dissertation together with core modules in Reintroduction and Rewilding, Wildlife Disease, and Human-Wildlife Conflict. Optional opportunities include Professional Experience, Field Placement, Population and Community Ecology, Evolution and Behaviour, Climate Change, and Advanced Geographic Information Systems. Students investigate contemporary conservation challenges including species recovery, disease management, ecosystem restoration, and the interactions between human populations and wildlife. The independent dissertation enables students to conduct original research involving data collection, analysis, and interpretation while developing critical thinking, communication, problem-solving, and project management skills. Overall, the programme prepares graduates for careers in conservation organisations, wildlife management, ecological consultancy, environmental policy, research, and biodiversity protection initiatives worldwide.
