COURSE CURRICULUM
The Strength, Conditioning and Rehabilitation programme for the 2026/27 academic year provides students with a strong scientific and practical foundation for careers focused on improving athletic performance, reducing injury risk, and supporting effective rehabilitation and recovery. The course begins with compulsory modules including Fundamentals of Sport and Exercise Biomechanics, Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology, Coaching, Pedagogy and Skill Acquisition, Practical Techniques in Strength and Conditioning, Foundational Movements and Fitness Testing, and Needs Analysis and Programming. Students develop an understanding of the internal and external forces that influence human movement and learn how biomechanical principles can be applied to enhance performance and minimise injury risk. Practical laboratory activities and digital measurement technologies enable students to collect, analyse, and interpret biomechanical data while considering ethical standards, inclusivity, and individual differences in movement patterns. This stage includes 36 scheduled contact hours and 114 independent learning hours. In the second stage, students study Applied Research Skills for Sport and Exercise Science, Practical Skills in Biomechanics, Applied Physiology of Sport and Exercise, Performance Analysis, Sports Injuries, and Training for Strength, Power and Conditioning. These modules develop expertise in research design, data collection, qualitative and quantitative analysis, and the use of digital analytical platforms while promoting culturally aware, ethical, and socially responsible research practice. Students are assessed through two one-hour examinations worth 25 percent each and an individual assignment equivalent to 2,500 words worth 50 percent. This stage includes 48 scheduled contact hours and 252 independent learning hours. Final-year study focuses on the Extended Research Project, Multidisciplinary Rehabilitation, Applied Coaching and Professional Practice, and Applied Athlete Monitoring and Corrective Performance Methods, alongside optional modules in biomechanics, physiology, psychology, nutrition, and data analytics. The Extended Research Project, module code SL6050, requires students to complete a 6,000-word dissertation worth 80 percent and a 15-minute presentation worth 20 percent, supported by 20 scheduled contact hours and 280 independent learning hours. Graduates are prepared for careers in strength and conditioning, rehabilitation, performance support, coaching, and sports science.
