COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sports Therapy programme follows a comprehensive three-year curriculum designed to develop students into competent, evidence-based, and industry-ready graduate sports therapists with the knowledge and skills required to assess, diagnose, treat, and rehabilitate musculoskeletal injuries. During the first year, students establish strong scientific and clinical foundations through modules including Fundamentals of Sport and Exercise Biomechanics, Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology, Introduction to Professional Practice, Fundamentals of Human Musculoskeletal Anatomy, Fundamentals of Clinical Assessment, Fundamentals of Sports and Exercise Massage, and Foundational Movements and Fitness Testing. Students explore the principles of human movement, biomechanics, injury prevention, and physical performance while developing practical laboratory skills and learning to collect and interpret biomechanical data using digital technologies and professional standards. In the second year, students advance their clinical expertise through modules such as Injury Management and Therapeutic Modalities, Applied Clinical Skills, Applied Functional Rehabilitation, Research Design and Analysis, Physiological Responses to Sport and Exercise, and Applied Biomechanics in Sport and Exercise Contexts. These modules focus on the assessment and management of acute and chronic injuries, tissue healing, pathology, therapeutic interventions, rehabilitation techniques, and evidence-based clinical decision-making. Students develop practical treatment skills while learning the importance of patient safety, informed consent, and personalised rehabilitation programmes. During the final year, students refine their professional competence through modules including Professional Practice in Sports Therapy, Neurology, Spinal and Tissue Dynamics, Clinical Populations and Enterprise, Advanced Physiology of Sport and Exercise, and a Dissertation project, with optional study opportunities in multidisciplinary rehabilitation, sport psychology, and data analytics. A major component of the final year involves completing 250 supervised clinical hours across a variety of practice environments, including experience within an in-house student-led clinic supervised by experienced clinical educators. Students gain expertise in pre-hospital trauma care, telehealth delivery, electronic patient records, remote consultations, and the management of complex clinical cases while applying principles of equality, diversity, and inclusion in practice. The programme also emphasises chronic pain management, sustainability, practitioner wellbeing, and lifelong professional development. Overall, the course prepares graduates for accreditation as Graduate Sports Therapists and successful careers within sport, healthcare, rehabilitation, and exercise environments.
