COURSE CURRICULUM
The Sports Performance programme provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the scientific, technical, and practical principles required to support athletic development and maximise sporting performance. The course begins with compulsory modules including Fundamentals of Sport and Exercise Biomechanics, Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology, Coaching, Pedagogy and Skill Acquisition, Data Driven Decision Making for Performance, Introduction to Sport and Exercise Psychology, Foundational Movements and Fitness Testing, and Needs Analysis and Programming. Students develop an understanding of human movement, the forces acting upon the body, and how biomechanics can be used to improve performance and reduce injury risk. Practical laboratory sessions and digital measurement technologies allow students to collect, analyse, and interpret biomechanical data while considering ethical practice, inclusivity, and the diverse needs of athletes. This stage includes 36 scheduled contact hours and 114 independent learning hours. As students progress, they study compulsory modules such as Applied Research Skills for Sport and Exercise Science, Performance Analysis, Sports Injuries, Managing High Performance Sport, and Science of Athletic Performance, with optional choices including Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology and Applied Nutrition for Sport and Exercise. Students strengthen their ability to design research studies, analyse qualitative and quantitative data, and use digital analytical platforms while developing professional judgement and an understanding of ethical, inclusive, and culturally aware research practices. This stage includes 48 scheduled contact hours and 252 independent learning hours. In the final year, students undertake compulsory modules including Extended Research Project, Data Analytics for Sport and Exercise, Placement and Professional Development, Talent Identification and Development in Sport, and Applied Athlete Monitoring and Corrective Performance Methods, alongside optional modules such as Research Skills in Biomechanics, Advanced Physiology of Sport and Exercise, and Advances in Sport and Exercise Nutrition. The Extended Research Project, supported by 20 scheduled contact hours and 280 independent learning hours, enables students to conduct an independent investigation within their discipline while developing advanced research, digital, and professional skills. The programme prepares graduates for careers in sports performance, coaching, strength and conditioning, performance analysis, athlete development, and sports science support roles.
