COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sport, Coaching and Physical Education course modules are designed to provide students with a strong combination of scientific knowledge, practical coaching skills and professional experience across three years of study. In the first year, students build a foundation in anatomy, physiology and human movement through the study of human structure and function while gaining introductions to primary and secondary physical education, sport and exercise psychology, sport sociology, ethics and pedagogy. They also develop research skills and an understanding of professional practice within sport and physical education settings, learning how theory can be applied effectively when working with young people and diverse participant groups. During the second year, students expand their understanding of growth and development and explore how physical education curricula can be adapted to meet the needs of different learners and communities. Modules examine the relationship between family, schools and communities, wider social and health issues in sport, and the importance of inclusive and effective pedagogy in practice. Students also gain practical experience through placements and professional development activities while studying exercise programmes for special populations, including individuals with stable health conditions and those requiring exercise referral support. Opportunities may also exist to gain industry-recognised exercise referral qualifications. In the final year, students undertake an independent dissertation project that allows them to investigate a specialist topic related to coaching, sport or physical education in depth while developing advanced research and analytical skills. Additional modules focus on critical approaches to coaching, health promotion and wellbeing, social issues affecting sport participation and professional placements that prepare students for employment. Optional modules allow students to further specialise in areas such as alternative physical activities, contemporary sport issues and accredited physical education teaching courses. Throughout the programme, students develop leadership, communication, reflective practice and problem-solving skills that prepare them for careers in coaching, teaching, sport development, health promotion and postgraduate study.
