COURSE CURRICULUM
The Psychology programme provides students with a broad and critical understanding of human behaviour, mental processes, and the practical application of psychological knowledge while developing strong research and professional skills. The course begins with compulsory modules including Thinking Like a Psychologist, Developing Psychological Knowledge, Questioning Psychology, and Using Psychology in the Real World, which introduce students to scientific methods, evidence-based practice, and critical thinking within psychology. Students explore different approaches to understanding human behaviour, learn how psychologists design and conduct research, and examine how psychological knowledge is applied in fields such as forensic, clinical, and health psychology. Further compulsory modules including Skills for Today's Psychologists, How We Think: Cognitive Psychology, Absurdities and Atrocities: Social Psychological Explanations of Human Functioning, Traits, Talents and Temperaments: Individual Differences, and From Conception to Coffin: Developmental Psychology provide knowledge across major areas of the discipline. Students may also choose optional modules such as Global Perspectives in Psychology, Psychology of Climate Change, Forensic Psychology, and The Psychology of Wellbeing to explore specialised interests. Professional development is a key feature of the programme, with students building communication, teamwork, reflective practice, self-care, ethical awareness, and inclusive practice skills while completing placements or projects that provide valuable workplace experience. Teaching activities include 25 scheduled contact hours, 240 independent learning hours, and 35 placement hours, while assessments consist of two equally weighted portfolios of 2,500 words or equivalent. In the final stage of study, students undertake the Psychology in Action Dissertation Research Project alongside compulsory modules including The Social Construction of Reality and Inside the Human Brain: Cognitive Neuroscience, with additional options such as Clinical Psychology, Health Psychology, Educational Psychology, Community Practice in Psychology, Gender, Sexuality and Psychology, and Evidence-Based Psychotherapeutic Interventions. The dissertation project allows students to independently design, conduct, analyse, and report an original empirical research study using qualitative or quantitative methods while demonstrating ethical awareness and advanced research skills, supported by 26 scheduled contact hours and 274 independent learning hours.
