COURSE CURRICULUM
This BSc Forensic Psychology degree is designed to provide students with a broad understanding of psychological theories and research while developing specialist expertise in the application of psychology to crime, criminal behaviour and the justice system. The programme begins by introducing students to the foundations of psychology, including how psychologists investigate human behaviour through scientific research, evidence-based approaches and critical thinking. Students develop essential skills in psychological research, data analysis, communication and understanding human behaviour across different contexts. In the first stage of study, modules such as Thinking Like a Psychologist, Developing Psychological Knowledge, Questioning Psychology and Using Psychology in the Real World help students explore different perspectives within psychology and understand how psychological findings influence areas such as forensic, clinical and health psychology. In later years, students develop specialist knowledge through modules including Forensic Psychology, Psychology of Crime, Cognitive Psychology, Social Psychology, Developmental Psychology and Individual Differences. These subjects allow students to examine the causes of offending behaviour, psychological explanations of crime, offender assessment and the application of psychology within criminal justice settings. The course also focuses on professional development through skills-based learning, placement opportunities and reflection on career pathways in psychology and related fields. Students develop important professional abilities including ethical practice, inclusive working, teamwork, communication and decision-making. In the final year, students complete an independent Psychology in Action: Dissertation Research Project, allowing them to investigate a forensic psychology topic of their choice using qualitative or quantitative research methods. They also study advanced areas such as cognitive neuroscience, assessment and intervention of offenders, addictive behaviours, evidence-based psychological interventions and professional resilience in forensic practice. Through a combination of academic study, practical experience and research training, graduates develop the knowledge and transferable skills needed for careers in forensic psychology, criminal justice, offender rehabilitation, mental health services, research, probation and related professional fields. The degree provides a strong foundation for further postgraduate training towards becoming a professional psychologist.
