COURSE CURRICULUM

The Occupational Therapy programme follows a comprehensive three-year curriculum designed to develop students into skilled, compassionate, and professionally competent occupational therapists capable of supporting individuals across a wide range of healthcare and community settings. During the first year, students establish a strong foundation in occupational therapy theory, human health, and professional practice through modules including Humans as Occupational Beings, Scientific Enquiry, Introduction to the Systems of the Human Body, Movement and Activity, Foundations for Occupational Therapy Practice, and Development over the Lifespan. These modules introduce students to the principles of occupation and wellbeing, human anatomy and physiology, lifespan development, and the role of meaningful activities in promoting health and independence. Students also begin gaining practical experience through Practice Placement 1, where they apply their learning within real healthcare environments. In the second year, students develop more advanced therapeutic and professional skills through modules such as Therapeutic Skills for Occupational Therapy Practice, Integrated Care, Health and Well-Being of Society, Environmental Influences on Occupational Performance and Identity, and Research Design and Data Analysis. These modules help students understand how physical, psychological, social, and environmental factors influence people's ability to participate in everyday activities and occupations. Two professional placements during this stage provide valuable opportunities to work with service users and multidisciplinary teams while developing confidence and clinical competence. During the final year, students focus on preparing for professional employment and leadership roles through modules including Preparation for Employment, Leadership and Innovation, Professional Futures, and Practice Placement 4. Students also complete an Independent Project that allows them to investigate an area of occupational therapy practice in greater depth while strengthening research and evidence-based practice skills. Throughout the programme, practice placements play a central role in developing professional competence and enabling students to apply theoretical knowledge within real healthcare settings. The course places strong emphasis on leadership, innovation, person-centred care, and lifelong learning to prepare graduates for modern healthcare practice. Overall, the programme equips students with the knowledge, practical skills, and professional behaviours required for successful careers as occupational therapists working across healthcare, social care, education, community services, and many other sectors.
