COURSE CURRICULUM
The Healthcare Science (Vascular Science) programme follows a structured three-year curriculum designed to develop students' scientific understanding, clinical competence, diagnostic abilities, and professional skills required for careers within vascular healthcare services. During the first year, students build a strong foundation through modules including Clinical and Professional Practice 1, Human Structure, Function and Scientific Practice, Biology of Health and Disease in Society, Abdominal Aortic Assessment, and Peripheral Arterial Disease Assessment. These modules introduce students to human anatomy and physiology, disease processes, healthcare science principles, and the fundamental techniques used to assess blood vessels and circulatory disorders. Students begin developing practical diagnostic skills while gaining an understanding of patient care, professional standards, and clinical practice within healthcare environments. In the second year, students further develop their technical expertise and research abilities through modules such as Clinical and Professional Practice 2, Scientific Research and Evaluation Practice, Developing Ultrasound Technology, Lower Limb Venous Assessment, and Peripheral Aneurysm Assessment. These modules provide advanced knowledge of ultrasound imaging technologies and vascular diagnostic procedures while strengthening students' abilities to evaluate scientific evidence and apply research findings to clinical practice. Students gain experience in assessing venous disorders, aneurysms, and circulatory conditions that commonly affect patients within vascular services. During the final year, students undertake more specialised and advanced study through Clinical and Professional Practice 3, Advanced Vascular Science Investigations, Advanced Ultrasound Technology, Alternative Imaging Modalities, and an Independent Research Project Dissertation. These modules allow students to develop expertise in complex vascular investigations, emerging imaging technologies, and advanced diagnostic techniques while enhancing clinical decision-making and patient management skills. The dissertation project provides an opportunity to conduct independent research and apply evidence-based practice to contemporary challenges in vascular science. Throughout all three years, clinical and professional practice modules provide valuable placement experiences that enable students to apply theoretical knowledge within real healthcare settings and work alongside multidisciplinary teams. Overall, the programme prepares graduates for professional roles within hospitals and specialist vascular services, supporting accurate diagnosis, treatment planning, and improved patient outcomes through advanced vascular investigations and imaging technologies.
